Today I have the pleasure of featuring Jenna Affanasiff of Revel Events. Phonix has had the pleasure of working with Jenna on a few occasions all at the beautiful Bridges Restaurant in Vancouver. Jenna is caring, friendly and very easy to work with. We wanted to feature her with a blog interview in order to get to know her a little better and because we think you should too; if you're looking for a great wedding planner:
Reuben, from the Phonix: Tell me a bit about your services...what do you do exactly?
Jenna: A better question for a wedding planner might be, “what don’t you do?”! My job is very dynamic, because no two weddings are exactly alike. As a planner, I’m a financial advisor, a time management guru, a decorator, a counselor, a risk management strategist, a bargain hunter, a manual labourer, an etiquette expert, and—by the end of the planning process—a friend.
I offer Complete Coordination, Partial Coordination, and Day-Of Coordination packages, as well as à la carte service for couples who don’t have room in the budget for a planning package, but need help with a few individual tasks that have them stumped. Depending on a couple’s needs, budget, and level of comfort with planning on their own, they can hire me to be by their side for every step of their planning journey, or they can hire me for just the elements of planning that are causing them the biggest headaches.
Reuben: What inspiration, work or life experiences led you to being a wedding and event planner?
Jenna: I have always been my friends’ and family members’ personal event planner—spearheading the planning and execution of birthday parties, baby showers, anniversary parties, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and weddings whenever the opportunity has arisen. In graduate school, I spent almost as much time on the Social Committee as I spent writing my thesis! After years of people saying, “you should do this professionally”, I saw that that was indeed possible and I took the leap and started my own business.
Reuben: If I were looking to hire a wedding planner for my wedding, what advice would you give me?
Jenna: First, congratulations! By hiring a reputable planner for at the very least Day-of Coordination, you are giving yourself the best wedding gift! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard vendors say, “I wish this couple had had a planner!” It makes all the difference to how relaxed and “in the moment” you are able to be on one of the most important days of your life.
Next, hire someone that you can see yourself being friends with outside of the realm of planning your wedding. You will spend a lot of time with your planner, and you’ll need to enjoy her company, and feel comfortable trusting her for advice and reassurance when (probably not “if”, unfortunately!) wedding stress sets in.
Finally, hire the most experienced wedding planner that you can afford within your budget. I can’t overstate the value of experience; it is the most important factor in a planner’s ability to handle the unexpected, advise you judiciously, and connect you to the most reliable vendors in the industry. This is one of the many wedding expenditures for which you really do get what you pay for!
Reuben: What makes your wedding planning business unique?
Jenna: I am the lead planner on 100% of Revel Events weddings. I have a team of indispensable assistants who help make my wedding days run smoothly and efficiently, but I have been there at the helm of every Revel client’s big day since launching this business in 2009. When you read a review of Revel Events online, you can be certain that you’re hiring the exact planner you’re reading about.
For the past few years, I have also limited my wedding bookings to one per weekend. That way, each of my couples has the assurance that for the week leading up to their wedding, they are my top priority and have my undivided attention. If they have an emergency on Wedding Eve, I won’t be too busy at another client’s wedding to give them the attention they expect and deserve.
Reuben: What types of weddings do you enjoy working on the most?
Jenna: I love any wedding that is full of personal touches that celebrate each individual couple’s love story. When a couple comes up with a décor or entertainment idea that I’ve never seen before, or when they trust me to bring to life a left-field idea that I think would be perfect for their day, I fall in love with my job all over again. In general, my favourite weddings have been the ones for which the couple has kept guest experience at the top of their priority list; if the guests are comfortable, entertained, well fed, and having fun, I’m a happy planner!
Reuben: What are some of your strengths as a planner?
Jenna: Energetic, well organized, and resourceful, I am an extremely detail-oriented “people person”. I can be serious when situations warrant seriousness, but in general I love to laugh and joke around, so planning with me is a lighthearted and fun experience. I thrive on solving problems and my feathers aren’t easily ruffled, even when unexpected disasters strike. I enjoy laying the groundwork for a seamless event, and the payoff at the end is so gratifying: I really do LOVE IT when a plan comes together!
